There are plenty of activities and gardens to visit as well as several RSPB reserves, two in Weymouth, one on Portland and a little further, near Poole, at Arne. In our own garden we have had green and spotted woodpeckers visiting us along with many other garden birds.
There are many festivals held around Weymouth harbour and the area thoughout the year. Always an interesting few hours can be spent looking around, and perhaps buying, at the local weekly markets and monthly farmers markets.
The Dorset coast has been caught on camera many times,the film “On Chesil Beach” from the book by Ian McEwan, the drama series of “Broadchurch” which shows the famous cliffs at West Bay, some of the celebrated film Dunkirk was shot around Weymouth harbour and filming of “Mary Anning” the famous fossil hunter at Lyme Regis.
Found in the cliffs at Kimmeridge was the skull of a pliosaur, as seen on TV with David Attenborough.
Fossil hunting is a popular activity along the Jurassic coast but do be careful because of sudden land slips of which there has been many due to recent wet weather.
